Of the various cosmetic dental procedures offered by dentists today, teeth whitening is the most popular and for good reason! Teeth whitening is your ticket to a bright, beautiful smile! Your teeth-whitening treatment will go much further when performed by a skilled teeth-whitening dentist like Dr. Grace Ishak at Boulevard Dental Citrus Park in Tampa, Florida. Dr. Ishak answers your questions about teeth whitening here to help you better understand what to expect from this treatment.
Teeth whitening is the process of bleaching your teeth to eliminate stains caused by aging, dietary choices, and tobacco use. Dental whitening removes both surface stains and stains ingrained inside the dentin (inner layer) of your teeth.
Age and tobacco use are common causes of stained teeth. The majority of tooth stains, however, come from your consumption of stain-causing foods and drinks, like coffee, tea, juices, sodas, and tomato-based sauces. Some stains may result from medications, dental trauma, or excessive fluoride use.
Dental whitening treatments can be completed in-office or at home using one of our custom whitening kits. Both methods are effective in brightening your smile naturally.
In-office whitening treatments take between 60 and 90 minutes to complete and produce instant whitening results! We’ll start by covering your gums to protect them from the whitening agent. Then Dr. Ishak will apply a peroxide-based whitening gel to your teeth, distributing it evenly across their surfaces to avoid spotting. Depending on the type of gel used, a UV light may be used to activate its ingredients. The gel penetrates the enamel of your teeth and breaks down stains, giving your teeth a whiter appearance. After 15 minutes, we’ll rinse off the gel and repeat the process 2 or 3 times until your teeth are stain-free.

Dental whitening is performed under your dentist’s supervision, making it the safest way to brighten your smile. When used properly, the whitening products your dentist administers pose little risk of harming your gums or teeth. The most common side effect of dental whitening is temporary tooth sensitivity, which typically fades within a day or two after treatment.
With good oral care (and routine dental cleanings), the results of dental whitening can be long-lasting, from one to two years. You can extend the results even longer by quitting smoking and watching what you eat and drink. Dr. Ishak is more than happy to schedule periodic touch-ups to keep your pearly whites shiny and bright in the long term.
